Vanity of Vanities, All is Vanity | 17:54 |
Two magnificent cantatas by the emigre composer Ernst Toch: Cantata of the Bitter Herbs, a musical-dramatic concert work liberally based on the Passover Haggada; and Vanity of Vanities, based on the biblical Book of Kohelet (also known to the English-speaking world by its title in the Septuagint, Ecclesiastes). Both composed on commission from important Los Angeles Jewish institutions, the works illustrate the sophistication of Toch’s orchestral writing, along with his capacity to move from tenderness to violence in a heartbeat.
