Oral history with Ruth, Trudie, and Minnie Malavsky focuses on their musical career, particularly as female cantorial singers [hazantes], in the mid-twentieth-century U.S. The sisters discuss the life and musical career of their father, Samuel Malavsky (1894–1983), and his impact on their training as professional musicians and their rise to fame. They also discuss their relationship with their older sister, Goldie [Goldele] Mavlavsky (1923–1995), a celebrated cantorial singer of the post-holocaust period. The three sisters also bring to light the difficulties they had to overcome within the Jewish community and the broader U.S. society, in general, as female musicians.
