Olshanetsky and Secunda: Yiddish Theater in America, Part 2

June 20, 2017

From their beginnings in Ukraine to their success across stage, screen and radio in America, our multimedia exploration of the great works and artists of Yiddish theater continues with two of the biggest names to grace the marquees of Second Avenue: Alexander Olshanetsky and Sholom Secunda.

Steeped in tradition, drawn on a backdrop of tragedy, delivered through comedy and compelled by romance, Olshanetsky’s and Secunda’s productions did more than entertain. They helped a community stay connected to its roots, escape its circumstances and look forward to its possibilities in a new world—a world which they now helped shape as breakout songs from the Yiddish theater permeated popular American culture for decades.

Explore the multimedia exhibit and don't forget to enter the Yiddish Theater music giveaway:

  • 5 new winners will get the music of Olshanetsky and Secunda on June 30th!
  • 5 will win the entire volume at a later drawing!
