The Music of Judith Shatin

November 20, 2024

Judith Shatin, who turns 75 this week, is a renowned composer of choral, chamber, orchestral, and electronic music whose work has received much critical acclaim. Fanfare has called her a composer “possessed of a strong and original voice.” She has received awards from the National Endowment of the Arts and commissions from such leading ensembles as the Kronos Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Players, and the Hexagon Ensemble. Shatin’s contributions to the Milken Archive include a Hanukkah dreidl song, settings of biblical verses (from Psalm 23 and the Song of Songs), and an excerpt from her cantata, Songs of War and Peace. (Photo by Sarah Cramer Shields)

Curator’s Pick: Sholom Kalib’s The Day of Rest

The Day of Rest is a concert service comprising settings of texts from the Sabbath liturgy composed in the style of the eastern European cantorial-choral tradition. The recording was part of the Milken Archive’s historic recording sessions with the Vienna Boys Choir and the renowned cantor, Naftali Herstik of the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem, whose recent passing was memorialized with obituaries in both The New York Times and The Guardian.

Benzion Shenker

Remembering Benzion Shenker

Benzion Shenker (1925–2016) was a giant of Hasidic music, highly regarded for elaborate niggunim cycles that were often likened to operas, and for his lifelong efforts to document and preserve the music of Modzitzer Hasidic life. This video features highlights from his 1998 oral history with the Milken Archive.
